The real situation at Junior Secondary Schools – A critical analysis

It is now one month since JSS learners got teachers, each JSS got at least a teacher who is expected to handle all the 14 learning areas.
The teachers who have been recruited to handle the 14 learning areas are graduates from universities who specialised in only two learning areas, this has subjected the teachers in total confusion since, the content mastery in other learning areas are way too low the expection.

For example a teacher who specialized in ENGLISH AND LITERATURE is forced to handle Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry etc.
These has pushed teachers to teach what they themselves don’t understand and hence JSS learners are suffering as far as content delivery is concerned.

Another challenge is the distribution of books by the government, it is now 7th week, JSS have not received text books. There are only two books in school that is Agriculture and Integrated Science books, this has made learning to be difficult in JSS.

Furthermore, the facilities, Primary schools since time immemorial, their infrastructures have been wanting….

There are some subjecs that are conducted in laboratories, Music rooms, Home Science rooms and computer rooms. In reality, the primary schools are lacking these facilities as compared to secondary schools, there is also electricity challenge in almost 90 percent of primary schools and especially in rural areas.

And computer being one of the learning areas needs availability of electricity in schools for it’s learning to take place, this has made computer science learning to be in quagmire.
In addition to other challenges, JSS learners have shown a lot of discontent having been domiciled in primary, these learners were head high thinking they would move to Secondary schools and explore in different environment, only to be shocked that they would maintain the same same environment with primary school learners, this has made no change in learners. They are continuing with the normal primary norms they are used to.

A good number of JSS TEACHERS have also shown alot of disappointment, these are teachers who specialized in two areas and are so much experienced in their two teaching areas only, and now are being forced to handle other learning areas they are uncomfortable with.

They are also graduates who had expectations of teaching is a Secondary school environment and here they are in Primary schools so differentiating them with primary teachers becomes a problem, The teachers were considering JSS to be domiciled in SECONDARY SCHOOL ENVIRONMENT since in that environment, there are also teachers who are also graduates of secondary education options. So, every teacher would teach as per his/her combination .
