Tragedy struck this morning in the Kibuon region of Nyakach subcounty, where a devastating accident claimed the lives of four individuals, including three students. The incident unfolded on the Sondu-Katito road when a passenger matatu collided violently with a parked lorry.
Maina Mwangi, the Nyanza Regional Traffic Enforcement Officer, confirmed that the conductor of the matatu was among those who lost their lives at the scene. Meanwhile, eight other passengers who sustained injuries were swiftly transported to Nyabondo Mission Hospital for urgent medical attention.
Witness Peres Auma Onyango recounted the harrowing moment, describing a thunderous crash followed by the anguished cries of those in distress. The ill-fated matatu was primarily filled with students from Ober Junior Secondary School in Oyugis, who were returning home after the school term ended.
Local villagers, acting as quick responders, assisted the police in getting the injured to the hospital following the 5:30 am calamity. Nyakach subcounty police commander Laurinius Odinga announced that an investigation into the incident is currently underway.
