TSC asked to Promote acting school heads, Principals & their deputies
The Secretary-General of the Kenya National Union of Teachers, Collins Oyuu, has asked the Teachers Service Commission to fast-track promotions of school heads and their deputies who have been acting for over three years. He said there should not be unfairness for teachers who have long served in an acting capacity in the institutions without confirmation.
This recent change by TSC on the acting period requirement of six months for promotion elicited debates among educators.
Opponents argue that this is actually a disadvantage to experienced teachers who have spent years serving in acting roles and even question possible favouritism in the promotion process.
Oyuu said the veteran educators have shown leadership capabilities, and, therefore, first consideration should be given to such before looking at other candidates with briefer acting tenures.
His sentiments are an echo of many teachers, especially those who feel passed over despite years of service.
Meanwhile the Teachers Service Commission, TSC, has approved transfers of about 14,613 teachers. Of the transferred teachers 226 are school Principals.
In Kakamega County, Twenty secondary school Principals have been reshuffled.
The reshuffle effected by the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) is aimed at streamlining the management of the schools and installation of discipline to the learners.
The affected schools are Silungai, Solyo, Shikokho, Shanderema, Mutoma, Eluche among others.
The handing over in the affected schools will be held between December 31 and January 6, 2025 supervised by the sub county directors.
The transfer letters for these teachers have already been dispatched and are available for collection; upon notification from the TSC County and Sub County Directors.
