TSC gets Sh390 billion for Teachers’ Recruitment this year

The Treasury has allocated Sh390 billion annually for the Teacher Service Commission (TSC) to hire teachers, according to John Mbadi, the Cabinet Secretary for the National Treasury and Economic Planning.

He made this announcement while serving as the Chief Guest at the 35th graduation ceremony of Migori Teacher Training College (TTC), where he congratulated the 648 graduates.

During the event on April 4, 2025, Mbadi expressed confidence in the country’s economic progress and indicated that additional funding would be directed towards the education sector to create more teaching jobs. He advised graduates to be patient for government deployment, emphasizing that it would happen sooner than expected.

Mbadi also praised Migori TTC for ranking among the top three institutions in the recent KNEC examinations. He highlighted the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) as a forward-thinking educational framework that enhances practical learning, reaffirming the government’s commitment to its full implementation.

He acknowledged the growing population’s need for more teachers to educate future generations and admitted that there has been a lack of discipline in securing adequate resources for the education system, which is vital for the future.

Additionally, he mentioned that Sh96 billion has been allocated for capitation to support primary, junior, and senior secondary school students, ensuring their educational futures are safeguarded.

John Chivile, the Chief Principal of Migori TTC, stated that the new graduates are well-prepared to implement the CBC syllabus, which aims to provide a comprehensive education that fosters innovation and practical skills. He encouraged more students to enroll in the college and called on the national government and the National Government Constituency Development Funds (NG-CDF) to provide scholarships and bursaries to help students with their college fees.

Tom Odege, Secretary General of the Union of Kenya Civil Servants and Nyatike MP, who accompanied Mbadi, urged the TSC to prioritize the employment of teachers based on their graduation year.

The MP also said that a country with no teachers is no country, urging the government to prioritise employment of teachers to reduce the student-teacher ratio.

Meanwhile, Migori Governor Ochilo Ayacko urged the national government to make the education profession an appealing career by offering better perks.

Ochilo said that teachers needed decent salaries to motivate them in classrooms to offer better education to the future generation.

He also congratulated the Migori TTC for training excellent teachers who would soon transfer the same knowledge and skills to the next generation.

The 648 graduates, class of 2024, were conferred with various certificates that included diplomas in early childhood education and diplomas in primary education. The institution also boasted a pass rate of 96 per cent.
