NATIONAL COHESION COMMITTEE MEETS TEACHERS SERVICE COMMISSION OVER EMPLOYMENT DIVERSITY

The National Assembly Committee on Cohesion and Equal Opportunity on Friday met with the Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Teachers Service Commission (TSC) Dr. Nancy Njeri Macharia over employment diversity and the 30 percent procurement reservation to special interest groups.

The discussion was chaired by Hon. Yussuf Adan Haji, who congratulated the team for doing an extensive research on the questions asked.

In the report submitted by TSC, the CEO said that the Commission has a work force of 346,760 registered teachers. This includes teachers employed to work at both Primary and Post Primary Institutions. The age distribution of teachers’ ranged from 21 years to 65 years with a majority being youth aged between 30 years to 40 years.

The Commissions’ Secretariat, which comprises of 2,842 staffs, is deployed across the country with 35 communities out of the 45 ethnic communities represented.

According to a report tabled by Dr Macharia, the majority of the2,842 secretariat staff are women.

Members of the Committee demanded to know why the TSC Secretariat staffs come from only 35 communities as opposed to the 45 ethnic communities as per the 2019 population census.

The Commission told the committee that it has a total of 4,907 teachers who are Persons With Disabilities(PWDs) while its Secretariat has employed a total of 120 PWDs.

“Over the years, we have considered PWD in our recruitment to ensure progressive implementation of the principle that at least five percent of employees in Public Office are Persons With Disabilities (PWD),” Dr Macharia said.

In her response, to curb the issue of communities not being represented in the TSC employment, Dr Macharia said that the Commission will work closely with Members of Parliament so that when opportunity arises, they can help them source for qualified persons from each community.

Hon. Haji expressed the committee’s gratitude to the team urging the CEO to do a comparative analysis and add supporting documents where needed.
