The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has established the Career Progression Guidelines (CPG) for junior secondary school (JSS) teachers, aligning them with those for secondary school teachers.

Teachers will now be promoted from the lowest job group C1 to the highest grade D5 in accordance with the CPG.

This decision follows complaints from teachers who were excluded from promotion interviews in January and February, during which 25,252 teachers were promoted.

The Commission has recognized junior schools as independent entities, even though they are located within primary schools.

Intern teachers working in JSS will only receive a stipend and will not be included in these promotion guidelines.

However, the TSC has made internship a required program for teachers seeking permanent employment.

These career guidelines apply only to teachers employed on permanent and pensionable (pnp) contracts.

According to the TSC, JSS teachers will start their employment at job group C1 for those with diplomas and at job group C2 for graduate teachers.

Diploma holders will automatically be promoted to job group C2 after three years of service, while graduate teachers will move to job group C3 after the same duration.

Teachers will remain at job group C2 for diploma holders and C3 for graduates until they participate in a promotion interview and are successfully promoted.

From job group C4 onward, positions are administrative, and promotions to these grades will be competitive and based on interviews.

The junior schools will have three recognized administrative positions that will receive compensation: Senior Master, Deputy Principal, and Principal. JSS teachers will enter the administrative ranks at grade C4, which corresponds to Senior Master IV.

It is important to note that a teacher can only be promoted to the next grade after serving a minimum of three years in their current grade.
