TSC Unveils Essential 5-Day Teacher Retraining Program for JSS, Kicking Off April 5

The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has officially announced a vital five-day retraining initiative for Junior Secondary School (JSS) educators, commencing on April 5, 2025. This program aims to bolster teachers’ expertise in the application of the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) and Competency-Based Assessment (CBA).

Designed with a comprehensive training framework, this initiative seeks to arm educators with cutting-edge teaching skills, facilitating a smooth adaptation to the dynamic educational landscape.

In collaboration with prominent educational organizations, the TSC will implement the Smart Cascade training model. This structured approach ensures that Master Trainers disseminate knowledge to Trainers of Trainers (ToTs), who will subsequently lead sessions for JSS teachers.

Here’s a breakdown of the training schedule:

– April 9–11, 2025: Master Trainers will undergo training at the Kenya Institute of Special Education (KISE), with participants including representatives from TSC, Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development (KICD), Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC), and other educational entities.

-April 16–18, 2025: Trainers of Trainers (ToTs) will receive face-to-face training at selected county venues.

– April 19, 2025: Coordination of training sessions will take place at sub-county and zonal levels.

– April 21–25, 2025: The final phase will see JSS teachers participating in subject-specific retraining at designated locations.

As Kenya fully embraces the CBC, this training is pivotal in aligning educators with the innovative methodologies needed to cultivate students’ competencies. The retraining initiative is anticipated to:

1. Deepen Teachers’ Grasp of CBC: Educators will engage in specialized training to refine their methods for facilitating competency-based learning.

2. Elevate Classroom Instruction: By equipping teachers with contemporary teaching techniques, the program aims to enhance lesson planning and boost student engagement.

3. Promote Consistency in CBC Application: Standardized training will ensure that all JSS teachers across the country effectively implement CBC standards.

4. Enhance Student Outcomes: Well-trained educators are positioned to deliver quality education, directly benefiting student performance.

This retraining program will specifically focus on teachers hired in November and December 2024, encompassing both regular and Special Needs Education (SNE) categories. Participants will be organized by subject specialization, including:

– Languages (English, Kiswahili, Kenya Sign Language)

– Mathematics

– Sciences (Integrated Science, Health Education)

– Humanities (Social Studies, Religious Education, Life Skills)

– Technical Subjects (Pre-Technical Studies, Agriculture, Nutrition, Creative Arts, and Sports)

The training will be conducted in person through a collaborative, multi-agency approach, ensuring that experts from various institutions provide valuable insights. Additional logistical details will be communicated as the program unfolds.

Accommodation: Teachers from Arid and Semi-Arid Lands (ASAL) and Special Needs Education (SNE) institutions will engage in residential training, while their counterparts from non-ASAL regions will participate in non-residential sessions.

Venues: The main training will take place at Teacher Training Colleges (TTCs) and other selected locations within the counties.

Support System: Master Trainers will guide the training journey, providing continuous professional assistance to educators.

The TSC has tasked its regional and county directors with crucial responsibilities to ensure the training’s effectiveness by:

– Coordinating the entire training process at their levels.

– Securing sufficient training venues.

– Formally inviting chosen teachers to join the program.

As the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) continues to expand, this initiative to enhance skills is a proactive measure to ensure that all Junior Secondary School (JSS) teachers are fully prepared to deliver high-quality education. Educators are encouraged to engage wholeheartedly in the training to elevate their skills and adapt to the evolving educational environment.
