TSC warning to parents over harassment of teachers

The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) in Narok County has noted increasing cases of Violence Against Teachers that has demotivated most teachers from performing their professional duties.

The County TSC Director Jane Mutua said a number of cases have been reported in her office where teachers were mishandled by parents in front of the learners, which dampen the spirit of teachers from delivering quality services.

Ms. Mutua who addressed the residents of Dikirr in Trans Mara East Sub County area in a public baraza attended by the County Commissioner Isaac Masinde, said a number of parents have been flocking her office to demand the transfer of teachers yet they did not have tangible mistakes that the teachers have done.

“When a delegation come to my office seeking the transfer of a teacher, I inquire from them the good and wrong things the teachers have done. Sometime the good is far more than the wrongs,” he said.

While adding that teachers are also human, the TSC Director said a well-motivated teacher will produce better results than a demotivated teacher.

She called on parents to speak positive things about the teachers in front of their children so that they can learn to respect them while in school.

“You do not have to give the teachers money so that they can be motivated, even speaking good of them and encouraging them to do a better job is enough to motivate a teacher,” reiterated Ms. Mutua.

The Director underscored the role of teachers in mentoring children saying a well mentored and educated child is an asset to the family, community and the country at large.

“Before you open your mouth as a parent to condemn a teacher in front of your children, think twice. Some of us are the way we are today because we choose our teachers to be our role models,” she said.

Narok County Director of Education Apuko Apollo told the parents that a child’s discipline starts at home, hence the need to ensure that their children are well mannered when at home.

He warned parents against fighting in the presence of children as it impacts negatively on their education and character development.

Commissioner Masinde asked the parents to take all their children to school saying it is wrong for any parent to keep a school going child at home while their counterparts are busy learning in school.
