TSC’s 25,000 Teacher Promotions: Advances or Continued Unjust Allocations?

The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) proclaimed the promotion of 25,252 teachers nationwide in April 2025. This massive application turnout, which saw over 189,000 teachers competing for the few available positions, underscored the fierce rivalry and desire for professional advancement in the teaching field.

The promotion procedure was defended by TSC CEO Dr. Nancy Macharia, who said it was decentralized to guarantee regional representation and complied with legislative standards. The distribution, however, has generated debate. For example,Garissa County received just 303 promotions, but Machakos County received 690, raising concerns about the equity of the distribution.

Teacher unions and Members of Parliament have expressed worry about the process’s transparency. They contend that some instructors have received several promotions in a row, while others have stayed in the same job category for more than ten years. This has resulted in requests for the TSC to outline specific promotion criteria and rectify the inconsistencies.

Despite TSC’s commendable efforts to tackle career stagnation, the promotion procedure seems to be lacking in fairness and transparency. The notable differences between counties and the continuous promotion of specific people indicate that a fairer approach is required. Teachers who have spent years in their profession should be recognized and given the chance to advance.
