Types of School Principals, Heads

TYPES OF PRINCIPALS :

1. Academic oriented: They love management by walking around classes to see who’s in teaching and how students are using their time without teachers. They personally check all the teaching documents e.g. schemes of work, lesson plans, they stamp and sign all internal exams before they are printed. They don’t like delegating academic roles to the DoS and deputy, they must crosscheck whatever their academic deputies approve. Hates co-curricular activities. Always has issues with games teachers and other co-curricular activities patrons and even students who engage in such. They just allow them to participate as a ministry requirement but anaomba tu washindwe kwa zonals warudi class kufundisha na kusoma. If a teacher goes out on co-curricular activities, they must look for extra time to recover the lessons missed; they discourage making local arrangements for other teachers to cover for those out of school for co-curricular activities. Unfortunately, their schools don’t perform excellently in academics; most are just average and they don’t feature anywhere in co-curricular competitions. The school is like their first home. They are always present with no side hustles out of school. Have a sour relationship with both teachers and students.

2. Infrastructure oriented: These ones don’t care what goes on in the classrooms, they have delegated all academic duties to deputies, DoS and other teachers. They are always cutting deals with contractors and supervising physical developments in the school. Examination results never excite them: wanafunzi wapite, waanguke, they don’t care, after all they provided all the necessary facilities. These ones appear in school technically. They are mostly meeting contractors or checking on their side hustles out of school. Loved by teachers who love working independently.

3. Co-curricular oriented: Most of these are also coaches or patrons of co-curricular clubs and games. Their school teams are always well equipped with games kits and all the necessary items. The patrons are allowed to source for external professional coaches to assist in training the teams and are well paid and motivated. One week before games begin, players or music teams are allowed to practice during lesson times. Their schools perform best in co-curricular activities but average in academics. Loved by students and games and clubs patrons.

4. All-round principals: These ones are mostly found in big schools from extra- county to national schools and big private schools. They have balanced all the characteristics of the first three. Their schools perform excellently in academics, co-curricular activities and have well maintained facilities. Have good relationship with both teachers and students.

5. Others: Hawa wako tu. Most of the time if they don’t have a strong deputy, the school can collapse. Deputies usually usurp their authority and powers.
