Why Occupational Therapy is a marketable course

I owe my success to KMTC

I am Josephine Jepchirchir, a 35-year-old Occupational Therapist at Kenyatta National Hospital.

Joining KMTC Nairobi Campus was the best decision I ever made in 2008, besides being a mother and wife.

Even though I didn’t know what Occupational Therapy (OT) course entailed, I was happy to have been selected to join the training.

I took up the challenge head-on, carrying out extensive research to prepare myself for the training that would eventually land me a career in healthcare.

After my successful graduation in 2011 with a Diploma, I embarked on searching for a job.

After making a few applications, a friend advised me to consider taking up a volunteer job.

I followed through with this option and approached Uasin Gishu County Hospital, where I began my career as an OT volunteer.

I would later transfer to Nairobi, where I continued to work as a volunteer at Mama Lucy Hospital.

Five months later, Kenyatta National Hospital advertised for positions in OTs, and I got interested, applied and luckily got a job.
I have now worked here for eight years.

In my thirst to advance my skills in the field, I have been undertaking numerous short courses.

Today, I stand tall as an alumnus of KMTC, and I owe my success to the College because that is where my career journey started.

It is based on this success that I encouraged my siblings to join the College.

Occupational therapy involves the ‘therapeutic use of everyday activities, or occupations, to treat the physical, mental, developmental, and emotional ailments that impact a patient’s ability to perform day-to-day tasks.’

To work well with patients, Occupational therapists require a strong sense of compassion and empathy.

My parting shot to students: Always do your level best!
