𝐊𝐚𝐤𝐚𝐦𝐞𝐠𝐚 𝐇𝐢𝐠𝐡 𝐥𝐢𝐟𝐭𝐬 𝐖𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐧 𝐫𝐞𝐠𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐟𝐨𝐨𝐭𝐛𝐚𝐥𝐥 𝐭𝐢𝐭𝐥𝐞 𝐚𝐟𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐛𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐌𝐮𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐮.
Kakamega High School was crowned the 2026 Western Region Secondary Schools boys’ football champions after defeating arch-rivals Musingu High School 2-0 after extra time.
The thrilling final between the two football giants that was played at Masinde Muliro Stadium, Kanduyi, in Bungoma County on Saturday ended goalless in normal time but come extra time, Kakamega popularly known as the Green Commandos struck twice to end Musingu’s reign as regional champions.
The explosive encounter drew massive crowds that filled the stadium to capacity, with supporters spilling over into the VIP section occupied by National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula, Bungoma Governor Kenneth Lusaka and other dignitaries.
The victory secured Kakamega High’s place at the Kenya Secondary Schools Sports Association (KSSSA) National Term Two Games to be held at the M-Pesa Foundation Academy in Thika from July 28 to August 1, where regional champions from across the country will compete for national honours.
Speaking after the match, Governor Lusaka said the thrilling final and quality football on display had reaffirmed Western Kenya’s status as one of the country’s leading football talent hubs.
“The victory and the classic display we have witnessed today cements Western Kenya’s position as a cradle of football talent in the country,” said Lusaka.
The Governor lauded the National Government for partnering with county governments to develop sports infrastructure, saying such investments were critical in identifying and nurturing young talent.
He said the completion of modern sporting facilities would provide young people with opportunities to develop their abilities and pursue careers in sports.
Masinde Muliro Stadium Kanduyi, which hosted the regional finals, has been developed through a partnership between the national government and the county government of Bungoma and is expected to become one of the region’s premier sporting venues.
Football enthusiast Moses Wanjekeche praised the Green Commandos for displaying top-notch football throughout the tournament and tipped the country’s most successful secondary school, as pertains football to compete strongly for the national title in Thika.
Wanjekeche further urged the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) to identify and nurture talented players emerging from school competitions, noting that secondary school football has historically produced many of Kenya’s finest players.
In the girls’ category, Archbishop Njenga Girls High School emerged Western Region champions after edging out Butere Girls 2-1 in the final to book their place at the national championships.
