Why you should specialize in Occupational Therapy as a medical student

I am Silas Wakulwa, Occupational Therapist

“It feels great being a KMTC alumnus as this is where my journey began. It is where the roots of my professional career were planted,” he begins the conversation.

The 45-year-old Occupational Therapist In-charge at Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) recalls he offered his services as a Lecturer at KMTC Nairobi, which later bore fruits resulting in the introduction of the Occupational Therapy Course at KMTC Machakos.

During this time, he was also working full-time at the KNH.
To build on the training he received at KMTC, he returned to school in 2012 to undertake a B.Sc. in Biology, Chemistry and Mathematics at Kenyatta University.

He later returned to the same University to study for a Master’s degree in Public Health.

His insatiable hunger for more knowledge led him to pursue a postgraduate degree in Monitoring and Evaluation.
He credits his incredible career progress to the strong foundation he received while at KMTC.

Occupational therapy involves the ‘therapeutic use of everyday activities, or occupations, to treat the physical, mental, developmental, and emotional ailments that impact a patient’s ability to perform day-to-day tasks.’

To work well with patients, Occupational therapists require a strong sense of compassion and empathy.

Silas has this message for students: Joining KMTC increases your chances of employment and earns you respect from society.
