The government is keen on achieving 100 percent transition as the last cohort of 8-4-4 learners are set to join secondary education from January 15th, 2024.

While addressing parents and guardians of the shortlisted Elimu scholars at Mathira East Sub County in Nyeri County yesterday, Mrs. Dorothy Kamwilu from the Ministry of Education said all the learners who sat for the last KCPE in 2023 are expected to be enrolled in various secondary schools.

Mrs. Kamwilu who is leading the monitoring exercise of the ongoing 2024 Elimu Scholarship selection process in Nyeri County said no learner should be left behind from accessing secondary school.

She appealed to other public and private organisations to embrace ‘giving back’ to support the most vulnerable and bright students to continue with their education.

“We know the Government Elimu Scholarship Programme (ESP) and financial support from partners is not enough to cater for all the children from needy backgrounds,” said Kamwilu.

He urged the Community Scholarship and Advisory Committee (CSAC) who are participating in the ESP under Jomo Kenyatta Foundation to undertake the exercise in a fair and transparent manner to give a chance to the most deserving learners from vulnerable families.

Mathira East Deputy County Commissioner, Rodgers Osundwa and CSAC Chairman said the Government Multi-Agency team which is coordinated by National Government Administration Officers (NGAO) will work closely to ensure all the learners in the Sub-County transition to Secondary school.

He asked parents to prepare their children to report to form one. “Even those who are still seeking financial support should know that the Government will continue to enforce 100 percent transition policy,” Osundwa said.

The DCC told parents who are constrained financially and struggling to raise school fees not to shy away from enrolling their children in Day-Secondary schools which are affordable and easily accessible.

In Nyeri County 1,620 learners applied for the Elimu scholarship, however only 111 very needy and bright students will be awarded after going through the interview process.

The 100 percent transition policy was introduced by the government in a deliberate effort to bridge the gap in education, especially for marginalized and underprivileged children.
