Understanding HELB Subsequent Applications

Since its establishment in 1995, The Higher Education Loans Board has served as a lifeline for students who intend to pursue higher education. This could either be students just commencing their educational journey for the first time or those seeking additional support for subsequent years of study.

The number of loans for which you’re eligible depends on the duration of your program. For instance, a four-year program typically allows for four loan disbursements, while a five-year program may accommodate up to five disbursements.

If you fall into any of these categories, we are pleased to let you know that HELB offers two primary types of undergraduate loan applications:

  1. First-Time Application: As mentioned earlier, this serves applicants venturing into higher education for the first time.
  2. Subsequent Application: After the first application, you are eligible for more loans. The subsequent application is designed for you if you are applying for the second, third, or fourth time in alignment with the duration of your academic program.

Requirements for Applying for HELB Loans

While you might think HELB is available to all undergraduates, you still need to meet certain criteria before the loan can be disbursed. So we advise that you familiarize yourself with the prerequisites for loan eligibility. We have made that easy for you. Below is a comprehensive overview of the requirements for applying for HELB loans:

Admission to recognized institutions

The first criterion is the most obvious – you must be admitted to a public or private university in Kenya recognized by the Commission for University Education (CUE). Not only that but ensure that your institution meets the accreditation standards before going ahead with your application to save you some stress.

Undergraduate program enrollment

At the time of publication, HELB is yet to cater to postgraduate students or students in other higher institutions. HELB loans primarily cater to students pursuing undergraduate studies. Make sure you’re pursuing a bachelor’s degree to meet the eligibility criteria.

Previous loan beneficiary

Just like its name suggests, subsequent HELB loan applications are reserved for individuals who have previously benefited from HELB financing.

If you’re applying for a second, third, or fourth loan disbursement, you must have received HELB loans in previous academic years.

Valid identification documents

To make your application smooth and seamless, have all the necessary documents at hand. A lack of these documents can render your application invalid.

So prepare essential identification documents ahead of time. You will need a valid national ID card or passport, to verify your identity during the application process.

Academic program duration

A four-year program typically allows for four loan disbursements, while a five-year program accommodates up to five disbursements. The number of loan disbursements you’re eligible for is contingent upon the duration of your academic program. Before applying, verify the duration of your program and plan your loan applications accordingly.

Financial disclosure

Be prepared to provide comprehensive details regarding your financial status, including information about your parents’ or guardians’ income, your income (if applicable), and any other sources of financial support you receive.

Honesty and transparency in disclosing your financial circumstances are essential for assessing your eligibility for different loan options and scholarships.
