KMTC Graduates over 21,000 in 93rd graduation ceremony
The Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC) graduated 21,261 students on December 5, 2024, in a vibrant ceremony at Moi Sports Center, Kasarani.
The event was presided over by Deputy President Prof. Kithure Kindiki, and attended by Health Cabinet Secretary Dr. Deborah Barasa, Principal Secretary Ms. Mary Muthoni, and other dignitaries.
Prof. Kindiki lauded the graduates for their dedication and rigorous training, which he said had prepared them to serve humanity with professionalism and compassion.
He emphasized that healthcare requires empathy, patience, and an unwavering commitment to others’ well-being.
He also highlighted the government’s ongoing health reforms under the Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda, particularly the shift to Taifa Care, investment in local vaccine production, and promotion of community health initiatives.
Prof. Kindiki urged the graduates to become agents of change and support these reforms in their communities.
Describing KMTC as a pillar of Kenya’s healthcare system, Prof. Kindiki emphasized the College’s role in training a skilled workforce that ensures quality healthcare delivery.
With over 66,000 active students and more than 20,000 graduates annually, KMTC remains at the forefront of training health professionals.
He encouraged graduates to explore international job opportunities, noting that the government supports programs such as foreign language courses and pre-departure training to enhance their global competitiveness.
Health Cabinet Secretary Dr. Deborah Barasa commended KMTC’s 97-year legacy of excellence in training skilled healthcare professionals and highlighted its recent recognition at the Institute of Certified Secretaries’ 13th Edition of the Champions of Governance (CoG) Awards, where it was named the top institution in the education category.
She stressed the importance of the graduates’ role in strengthening primary healthcare and advancing Universal Health Coverage.
Dr. Barasa also assured graduates of the Ministry’s commitment to supporting their local and global employment opportunities, citing KMTC’s facilitation of over 6,500 overseas job placements in the past five years.
Principal Secretary Mary Muthoni praised the graduates for embracing KMTC’s values of dedication and excellence.
She highlighted KMTC’s cutting-edge training, mentorship, and research programs, and thanked parents, guardians, and staff for their support.
KMTC Board Chairperson Mr. Joseah K. Cheruiyot reaffirmed the College’s commitment to excellence, revealing an allocation of Kshs. 804 million last year for the recruitment of 607 new staff to enhance training.
CEO Dr. Kelly Oluoch noted the successful implementation of the College’s Strategic Plan 2023-2028, which focuses on quality training, research, technology integration, and sustainable growth.
Dr. Oluoch also celebrated KMTC’s ISO 9001:2015 certification and the introduction of programs like the Diploma in Health Insurance Management, aligned with Kenya’s UHC goals.
The theme of this year’s ceremony, “Fit-for-Purpose Health Workforce,” reflects KMTC’s commitment to equipping graduates to tackle emerging healthcare challenges.
