KUCCPS introduces diploma in Law for KCSE C plain students 2025/2026

The Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS) has introduced a new Diploma in Law program targeting students who attained a C plain in their Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE).

This initiative is a result of a partnership between KUCCPS and the Kenya School of Law (KSL), offering a fresh opportunity for students interested in the legal field. For the first time, KUCCPS is placing students in a Diploma in Law program at KSL, enabling those who previously thought a career in law was unattainable to pursue legal studies.

Traditionally, legal education in Kenya has been limited to students with high KCSE grades who qualify for a Bachelor of Laws (LL.B) degree. However, this new program creates an alternative path, allowing students with C plain to join the legal profession through a structured Paralegal Training Program at KSL.

The diploma course provides essential legal training, equipping students with skills relevant to careers such as court clerks, legal assistants, investigation officers, and case management officers. Graduates will have opportunities in law firms, government institutions, corporate organizations, and the justice sector.

Speaking at the launch event on Monday, February 10, KUCCPS CEO Dr. Agnes Mercy Wahome emphasized that this initiative is aimed at widening access to professional courses.

“This is a step toward ensuring that every student, regardless of their KCSE grade, has access to quality education and career opportunities. KUCCPS remains committed to offering diverse pathways for learners,” she stated.

KSL Director Dr. Henry Mutai also highlighted the growing demand for paralegal professionals in Kenya’s legal system.

“This program equips students with critical legal knowledge to support the justice system. Through this collaboration, we are making legal education more accessible and impactful,” he added.

With this development, KSL has become the 18th public institution outside the Ministry of Education to be integrated into the KUCCPS placement system. Other institutions under this system include the Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC), the Kenya Institute of Mass Communication, and the Kenya Forestry College.

Entry Requirements and Application Process

To qualify for the Diploma in Law, applicants must have a minimum KCSE mean grade of C plain, with at least a C+ in English or Kiswahili. The program runs for two years, divided into three academic terms per year, and includes a three-month practical attachment in the final year.

The first-year tuition fee is Ksh. 131,000, payable in three termly installments, while the second-year fee is Ksh. 136,000.

The placement portal opened on January 24, 2025, and students have until February 14, 2025, to submit their applications.

To accommodate different learners, the Diploma in Law program offers flexible study options, including evening virtual classes for working professionals.

Form Four graduates who sat for KCSE between the years 2000 and 2024 are eligible to apply for the May 2025 intake via the KUCCPS online portal.
