The school is now a two streamed national mixed boarding school with a population of 231 students. With the help of the ministry of education, we have been able to put up modern dormitory for girls, five classrooms and a laboratory. The story of Kuja Special Schools, Rongo Town and how they got their name.
If you’re a resident of Rongo, you must have wondered why Kuja Schools (Primary & Secondary) for the Deaf are located in Rongo Town, & not in Kuja, or why they are named Kuja yet are in Rongo Town.
Geographically, Kuja is the region around River Kuja, several kilometers from Rongo Town. There are two places referenced as Kuja.
The first is River Kuja, which is a few hundred meters from Kanga Machine, on your way to Awendo…this is the place that hosts St. Jonathan Comprehensive School & St. Jonathan Mixed Secondary School.
And the second is Kuja Nyokal, a small sleepy center on your way past Kanga High School. This is also the place that hosts Kanyasrega Nyokal Mixed Secondary School & Kuja Comprehensive School.
River Kuja crosses both places.
Back in the day (in the 1970s/80s), the Government of Kenya (GoK) had secured a large parcel of land at Kuja. The intention was to build a special school to serve the region’s Persons Living with Disabilities (PLDs). The population in question were the deaf, aka, the hearing impaired.
However, when construction started, the uneducated villagers ganged up & chased the contractors & their masons away. According to the villagers, building such a school around them equated to inviting the evil spirit that brings deafness. They feared that having the school around them would increase the cases of deafness in their community.
The government did not resist them much and instead opted to acquire land in Rongo Town where, they argued, people were better exposed.
Unfortunately, the schools had been registered by the time the second parcel was acquired, and, thus, the first name, aka, Kuja, stuck. That is how we have the name Kuja right at the center of Rongo Town.
The land at Kuja that had been acquired for the schools still lies idle and may one day be out to meaningful use.
