A Member of Parliament is asking the Teacher Service Commission to ensure that teachers are not treated unfairly when it comes to employment.

Makueni MP Susan Kiamba wants TSC to hire teachers correctly because education should not be influenced by politics.

She urged TSC to follow their duties in the country and emphasized that education should not be influenced by politics.

“Politics can be involved in everything except education. The TSC needs to remember they are funded by taxpayers, and political affiliations won’t provide the resources and salaries they require,” she stated.

The lawmaker was talking as she distributed updated books to schools in her area, focusing on day schools that lack resources like textbooks. The legislature pointed out that some teachers have been jobless for 15 years while others get hired quickly.

“There are many trained teachers, but some people are allegedly receiving employment letters without even going through an interview. Meanwhile, there are qualified teachers who have not been hired.”

The MP also mentioned that capitation funding is still a problem. They explained that the funding is often delayed and insufficient, causing schools to accumulate debts and struggle to pay suppliers.

The government’s failure to provide funding causes students to struggle to pay for their education expenses. Principals are feeling stressed about managing schools with inadequate financial support, according to lawmakers.

Kiamba also mentioned that the problem has been exacerbated by the practice of handing out school certificates without paying the required fees.

“Before, schools would receive funding when students paid their fees and cleared them before receiving certificates. Now, students are able to receive their certificates before paying. Kiamba asks where schools will get their funding from now.”
