The concept of clinical nurse education was born in MTRH in 2013. This was in line with its strife to be a world class referral hospital. Clinical nurse educators are the key link pin in bridging the gap between knowledge possessed, knowledge practiced and evidence based practice. Nurse educators play a pivotal role in strengthening the nursing workforce, serving as role models and providing the leadership needed to implement evidence-based practice. MTRH has a total of 15 CNEs serving over 900 clinical nurses.

Activities

We are looking forward to launching an e-learning platform for in-service training to address the learning needs of nurses at the comfort of their units & homes. On this platform all presentations will be accessed as well as online continuous education courses that can earn the nurses certificates and improve delivery of quality care.

  1. BRIEF SUMMARY OF EACH DEPARTMENT/SECTIONS

The Nursing department in MTRH is a society of professions that hold an expansive view of health and believes that access to high-quality, patient-centered nursing care is a social right, not a privilege. It values integrity, dignity, rigor, curiosity and excellence. In its endeavor to provide quality nursing care services, the department emphasizes innovation grounded in creativity and the integration of practice, training and policy in service of social justice and health equity. We strive to create a working environment that is caring and supports openness and transparency.

Nurses are found in virtually every unit that provides patient care in the hospital.

Directorate of Nursing has a unit called Clinical Audit and Nursing Research

 CLINICAL AUDIT AND NURSING RESEARCH

This unit is a quality improvement process that seeks to improve patient care and outcomes through systematic review of care against set standards and the implementation of change. The key component of clinical audit is that performance is reviewed/audited to ensure that what should be done is being done, and if not it provides a structure to enable improvements to be made. Clinical audit comes under the clinical governance umbrella and forms part of the system for improving the standard of clinical practice. Clinical governance is a systematic approach to maintaining and improving the quality of patient care within a health system. It provides framework through which health organizations are accountable for continually improving the quality of their services and safeguarding high standards of care by creating an environment in which excellence in clinical care will flourish. The six pillars of clinical governance include; Clinical Effectiveness, Research & Development, Openness, Risk Management, Education & Training and Clinical Audit.

The clinical audit unit is tasked with making regular audits on patient care services provided in the hospital to ensure that quality holistic care is given to the patients in line with the current standards in operation. It also identifies areas for service improvements, develops and carry out action plans to rectify or improve service provision while monitoring to ensure that these recommendations are implemented.

Data from patient files is collected daily and fed into the SPSS software. This data is analyzed on a monthly basis and a report is written and submitted to the management for action. Several researches have been conducted by the unit using the data collected and a number of surveys have also been done to give answers to issues raised concerning the care that the patients received. Findings from the surveys and the researches done have been shared with the management and various divisions in the hospital for corrective actions.  Findings from the research done have been published in various referred journals.

The unit has also collaborated with the Clinical Nurse Educators in the implementation of a few projects in the nursing department including the evaluation of the nursing process uptake by the primary nurses.

OCCUPATIONAL HEALTH AND SAFETY COMMITTEE

Occupational Health and Safety covers staff health, safety and welfare at the workplace. It aims at ensuring both their mental and physical well being through prevention of work related injury and illness by eliminating hazards and reducing occupation health and safety risks.

The hospital is committed to providing a workplace that promotes and protects the health, safety and welfare of the workers and patients.

There is a health and safety policy in place; formulated in line with the applicable laws, regulations and standards. This document is the guideline in implementing and managing health and safety in the hospital.  The policy clearly states out the responsibilities for health and safety, detailing what needs to be achieved and provides information on the arrangements that are in place for managing health and safety to:

  • Eliminate hazards and provide adequate control of health and safety risks arising from work activities so as to prevent injury and illness
  • Engage and consult with the workers on health and safety issues
  • Ensure compliance to occupational safety and health laws and regulations

The hospital has an OHS Committee which is responsible for the management of health and safety functioning and events. It comprises of 15 members with representation from all cadres of the hospital. Infection Prevention and Control, Waste Management and Fire Safety/ management sub committees make up the OHS Committee.

Occupational Health and Safety Secretariat   undertake the following:

  • Registration and renewal of workplace licence
  • Health and safety inspections, audits and risk assessments
  • Ensure Medical examination and surveillance of workers in the relevant departments
  • Ensure examination of plants
  • Health and safety training and sensitization, policy development
  • Accident/incident reporting, investigation, costing and processing of WIBA claims

The hospital participates in national and international health and safety events including conferences and awards.  Annually, the hospital participates in marking the world safety and health at work day (28th April) which is celebrated to commemorate workers who have lost their lives in line of duty. In regard to this, we take stock of health and safety performance in workplaces and put efforts towards prevention of accidents and illness at work.

The hospital participated in the national OSH Awards 2017 and emerged second nationally and was given trophy to this effect. Participation is considered based on audits undertaken by the directorate of Occupational Health and Safety to evaluate health and safety performance of workplaces.

  1. DEPARTMENTAL OBJECTIVE

We accomplish this by educating each generation of nurse leaders, scholars, and practitioners; transforming health care practice; and advancing nursing sciences.

  1. ANY INFORMATION PERTAINING THE DIRECTORATE

Simulation Centre

Simulation is the imitation of the operation of a real-world process or system. It is a technique used to replace or amplify real experiences using a model.

Aviation and aerospace industries have been using simulation as a teaching tool for many years. Simulators are now widely used in education and training in a variety of high risk professions and disciplines, including  medicine and nursing, the military, commercial airlines, nuclear power plants and business.

The simulation centre provides a safe environment to teach, enhance, assess the knowledge, skills judgement, teamwork, behaviour, communication skills and practice of healthcare providers using  hi- fidelity manikins. The manikins provide simulation-based education to challenge and test clinical and decision-making skills during realistic patient care scenarios. These are interactive technologically advanced manikins that allow learners to practice patient management.

Nurses’ Simulation and Resource Centre in MTRH will be used for improvement of nursing skills through use of simulated patient interaction and treatment. This in turn aims at improvement of quality care offered to our clients.
