A Spot light on Ng’iya Girls’ Basketball team.

The mention of Nyanza Girls’ Secondary schools basketball brings to the fore of one team; Ng’iya Girls High school. Among other emerging and established top guns in the region, one will not fail to mention the Siaya based school.

The girls remain unbeaten in 2024; so far!

Ng’iya Girls High School won the maiden edition of Eliud Owalo Foundation – Nyanza Region Basketball Festival played on March 2nd to 3rd at Jomo Kenyatta Sports Ground in Kisumu.

The Siaya-based girls-only national school crushed Tuk Jowi Girls 63-38 to clinch the much-hyped basketball trophy. It was not the first time the two perceived arch-rivals met at the court. In 2019, Ng’iya Girls taught the Migori-based institution a hard-lesson when they beat them 46-29 in the regional semifinals.

After thrashing Kereri Girls 50-7 and Sironga Girls 57-4 during the group stages, the centenary-old institution was destined to bag the title.

At the quarter finals, the rivalry between Ng’iya Girls and Barchando Girls (both from Siaya County) was so intense. The latter was outfoxed 35-21.

The starlets continued to display their prowess and outperformed Nyakach Girls in the semifinals 30-20.

The head-coach, Naftali Ambala who was accompanied by the school’s arrowhead, Hellen Masengeli and a platoon of other teachers said that the girls were set for victory after a rigorous training session.

At the Siaya County games, the red-hot Ng’iya ran riot over their opponents. They thrashed Lwak Girls 88-22 before seeing off former County Nyamira Nyamira 62-30 at the preliminaries.

To book a slot to the Nyanza Region’s 2023 term one games, Ng’iya humbled other former champs and basketball giants Barchando 32-19 in a pulsating finale.

They have been drawn in pool B alongside defending champs Ototo Mixed (Homa Bay), Kisii’s St. Angela Sengera Girls and hosts St. Barnabas.

They kick off their quest for regional glory on Wednesday against St. Barnabas. They will then take on Ototo Mixed before winding up their preliminaries against St. Angela Sengera Girls on Friday.

Ng’iya made their maiden appearance at the KSSSA National games in 2023 with their 3×3 Basketball team.

Will they lift the regional trophy? It is a wait and see situation for now….
