The Kenya National Examinations Council, knec, has given fresh guidelines on how the 2020 KCSE project based subjects are to be handled. This a follow up to an earlier circular from the council to schools immediately after closure due to the covid 19 outbreak in the country. Via a circular dated March 27, the council had promised to give further guidelines on the handling of Mile stones 1 and 2 for group IV subjects; when schools reopen.

Group IV subjects which have a project component are: Art and Design (442/3), Agriculture (443/3), Wood Work (444/2), Metal Work (445/2), Building Construction (446/2) and Computer Studies (451/3).

But, with schools still closed and some of the projects having reached the final phase (harvesting/ final stage for agriculture projects), the council has now directed schools to capture and upload the data.

“Take photographic evidence of the candidates’ projects (in .gif or .jpeg formats; these two are photograph formats obtained by using a digital Camera) for their (2020 KCSE students taking Agriculture) records and dispose of the project by July 15, 2020.” reads a circular by knec boss Dr Mercy Karogo that is dated June 22, 2020.

“Upload the pictorial evidence together with the scores awarded onto the portal (knec portal) when new guidelines are issued after the schools reopen,” she adds.

The has at the same time promised to issue guidelines for other subjects. Schools are set for reopening in September; with candidate classes expected to be given first priority.

Schools in dash for 2024 KCSE repeaters

Advertisements

Secondary schools are eyeing thousands of 2023 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education, KCSE, candidates who failed to get the minimum University entry grade so as to enroll them to repeat; in 2024.

In passionate messages circulated on Social Media platforms, the schools seek to recruit candidates who scored mean grades of C- (minus) and C (plain).

Most schools are offering various incentives so as to attract as many repeaters as possible in what is seen as a move to increase their overall performance.

“Good morning. kindly connect me to any candidate who scored a C (plain) and C-(minus) respectively in last year’s k.c.s.e and he/she is willing to repeat for a free scholarship,” reads one of such messages.

Other schools are even ready to offer more incentives, including: paying registration fees for the repeaters and giving them pocket money.

“Are you a candidate who sat for K.C.S.E. 2023 and obtained C (plain) or C-(minus) and you believe that you can add value again at ….. partnering with well wishers is willing to give a SCHOLARSHIP to you in 2024 in form 4 so that u can unleash your full potential,” reads yet another message.

According to the latest circular from KNEC, the registration of candidates for the 2024 KCSE and KCSE QT examinations will start from February, 2024.

The government of Kenya pays examination fees for all candidates in public and private schools except repeaters, prisoners, private candidates and non Citizens.

“Any 2023 female candidate with a mean grade of C and wishes to repeat form four 2024. Full year fee shall be provided,” read, yet, another advert.

A total of 697,222 candidates sat the 2023 KCSE exams in 10,287 centres countrywide; with 63, 102 scoring C (plain) and 83,358 others managing C- (minus).

These candidates are eligible to join diploma courses, but others may opt to repeat so as to try and achieve university entry. A total of 125,746 candidates scored mean grade of C+ and above in KCSE 2023 exams.

How some teachers are engaged in money making side hustles

Advertisements

Teachers have devised ways of smarting out of the effects meted by the current Corona virus pandemic. Instead of just idling around, the teachers are maximizing on the ample time span at their disposal to rake it in. The current Covid19 Pandemic has seen a quick shift in lifestyle; with the onset of the stringent measures actualized by the government to combat the pandemic.

Some teachers are offering online services at a pocket friendly fee. Top in this list is the crop of tutors providing Kenya Revenue Authority, KRA, services. These include: Registering new KRA certificates, Filing individual tax returns, downloading P9 certificates, Resetting KRA Passwords, changing KRA individual Email addresses, Changing and updating tax obligations on iTax portal. These services are provided at charges of between Sh.0 and Sh.500. still on online assistance, one can be assisted with online services partaining to Teachers Service Commission (TSC), Higher Education Loans Board (HELB) and Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS).

“I file between 10 to 15 KRA returns (and other related services) per day; on average. I charge Sh.150 for those with withholding certificates and Sh.100 for those without the certificates,” said one teacher who has been offering the service for about five years, now. A quick calculation shows that this teacher earns close to Sh.1,000 per day.

Advertisements

According to this teacher, his clients are only expected to send iTax log in credentials via WhatsApp. payment is done via Mpesa once the E-slip is generated. “I have seen a spike in the numbers of clients this year. This is partly to the current corona virus pandemic that has seen closure of most cyber cafes and Huduma Centres,” he adds. At Huduma centres filing is done at no cost and all that one needs to present is his/ her P9 form.

“Most of my clients are teachers. I reset their KRA passwords free of charge. I have specialized in filing returns for teachers contracted by the Kenya National Examinations Council, KNEC, as examiners. For this group of teachers, declaration of withholding tax is required,” he notes. This is the easiest task to execute as one requires only a working computer (with the necessary software) and a MODEM/ phone.

Here are links to the most important news portals:

Then, there are those teachers providing E-learning services, exam materials and consultancy services. since kids are at home, most parents are grappling with engaging the kids. As such, electronic revision materials are coming-in-handy. Some teachers have developed a number of these materials in soft copy. They then share question papers on various social media platforms. To assess the work done at home, parents and/ or teachers require marking schemes. Consequently, the teachers provide their phone contacts on the question papers and those willing can request marking schemes for as low as Sh.50 per paper set. The marking schemes are sent via Email or WhatsApp after the payment is completed through Mpesa.

Since some schools have created WhatsApp groups for their learners (using the parent/ guardians’ phone numbers), it is booming business for these tutors. Other schools have been providing assignments through email services.

Similarly, a section of teachers has been executing paid online advertisements and promotional services. One provides a referral code to a given online service provider and gets commissions if a customer uses the code. But, on a sad end, this has become the new scamming avenue for scammers. The scammers promise ‘huge bonuses’ to any one who shares the link to a given number of individuals or social media groups.

There are also those teachers earning from writing services; by writing a given number of articles or pages. Others are paid for completing online assignments. Block chain and Bitcoins are other avenues used to mint money online.

Finally, the current situation has provided those with businesses, firms and farms ample time to maximize on profits.

Knec tells KCPE 2023 candidates to collect their result slips and check for mistakes

Advertisements

In summary:

  • Knec asks KCPE 2023 candidates to collect their result slips
  • Candidates to collect results from former Primary schools
  • In case of errors, candidates should raise them with Knec
  • Candidates given a window of 30 days.

The Kenya National Examinations Council, Knec, has asked all the 2023 Kenya Certificate of Primary Education, KCPE, candidates to immediately collect their result slips.

In a statement on its social media platforms, the Council asks the candidates to collect the provisional result slips from their former primary schools.

In case of any errors, the candidates should raise it with the council for corrections.

“Candidates are advised to visit their schools and collect the official provisional results slips and raise any query for review of their results, if any, within the stipulated 30-day period.” Says the Council.

This comes as most candidates and schools raise concerns over the released results.

In what puts the credibility of the results in limbo, some candidates were awarded marks and grades for subjects they did not sit for. A good example is a scenario where Kenya Sign Language results appeared on some of the SMS results from Knec.

In other instances there were inconsistent grading and awarding of marks for some candidates.

Already, some schools and candidates have filed cases in court to oppose the results; saying that the marks warded by Knec were too low.

The 2023 KCPE Results were announced on Thursday 23rd November 2023 by Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu.

What followed was a long agonizing wait for the results as the Knec SMS code 40054 experienced hitches.

Knec under fire for irregularly suspending Several KCSE Examiners

The Kenya National Examination Council (KNEC) is facing criticism after claims that it unjustly prevented several teachers from participating in the marking of the 2024 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Examinations (KCSE).

During a meeting with the Standing Committee on Education on Thursday, Kisii Senator Richard Onyonka inquired about the reasons behind the exclusion of 32 teachers from Poroko Friends School in Narok County from the marking process.

Onyonka stated that, despite having the necessary qualifications, the examination council chose not to allow these teachers to take part in marking.

The senator criticized the Ministry of Education for what he described as the unfair treatment of these teachers and sought clarification on whether the decision to exclude them from this important task could be reconsidered.

He also urged the committee to investigate claims of intimidation, threats, and incitement directed at some teachers from Poroko Friends School.

Furthermore, the Standing Committee on Education was asked to provide an explanation for the mass transfer of teachers from the school.

In his address to education stakeholders, Onyonka urged the Ministry of Education to implement effective measures to ensure that teacher transfers do not have a negative impact on the educators involved.

He also called on committee members to take immediate action to support the teachers affected by the mass transfers carried out by the Teachers’ Service Commission (TSC).

“The committee should detail any steps the Ministry of Education is taking to ensure that teacher transfers are conducted in a way that is fair, non-discriminatory, non-punitive, and humane for those affected,” Onyonka recommended.

Several other teachers had been barred from marking last year’s Exams with KNEC refusing to give reasons for cancelling some of the invites.

The Council had said the justifications are ‘confidential’, and dismissed claims that those rejected came from schools that were suspected to have been involved in exam malpractices.

Knec’s response came after uproars from Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET ) branch officials led by Vihiga executive secretary Sabala Inyeni, who complained bitterly that it was unfair considering that some of the markers received the communication when they had already reported for the national exercise.
