The school was founded in February 1964 by Kenya’s Ministry of Education.

It started as a girls’ day secondary school at the former Woodley Primary School in Nairobi.

The aim was to provide education to girls from low-income and disadvantaged families, especially since such opportunities were limited before independence.

The School began with:

  • 35 students and
  • 2 teachers

The school’s first headmistress was Mrs. Rebecca Njau and her deputy was Mrs. Edith Matiba, wife to veteran Murang’a politician, Kenneth Matiba. The school’s first Chairman of the Board was the late Rt. Rev. John Gatu of the Presbyterian Church of East Africa

In 1965, a hostel was set up to accommodate students who lived far away.

By 1967, the school expanded to a two-stream system and the first class sat for O-level exams.

In 1968, new facilities (administration block and dormitory) were built with support from USAID.

In 1970, the school introduced A-level classes, increasing enrolment.

In 1974, a major fundraising (harambee) was officiated by Daniel arap Moi (then Vice President).

This led to construction of more dormitories and expansion of other facilities.

Over time, the school became a fully-fledged boarding school with multiple streams and better infrastructure.
