2024 form one placement nightmare as thousands of learners placed in ‘wrong’ schools

It has now emerged that more than 120,000 candidates who sat for the 2023 Kenya Certificate of Primary Education examination were placed to secondary schools they did not select.

The ministry attributes this due to shortage of space in seven counties: Nairobi, Kwale, Narok, Kilifi, Mombasa, Kajiado and Isiolo.

Possible causes of learners being placed in unchosen schools include vacancy constraints, with limited availability of vacancies in preferred schools leading to allocations in alternative institutions. Ministry of Education data indicates that 62,007 students were placed outside their counties due to a substantial increase in the number of 2023 KCPE candidates, creating placement challenges, particularly in counties with insufficient capacity.

Incomplete selection is another factor, with 28,052 candidates failing to select any secondary schools, prompting the Ministry to place them in public sub-county secondary schools closest to their former primary schools. Miscommunication also plays a role, where learners may claim not to have chosen a particular school despite inadvertently making a selection.

To address these issues, suggested solutions include encouraging prompt action, urging learners placed in schools they didn’t choose to report promptly or submit transfer requests to their preferred institutions. Additionally, verifying choices during the primary school phase is essential to avoid discrepancies in the placement process.
