Revised Entry Requirements For Joining Teachers Training Colleges, TTCs

The Ministry of Education has now reduced the minimum requirements for joining a Teacher Training College, TTC, in Kenya. All that a KCSE graduate is supposed to have is a minimum mean grade of a C (plain). All other requirements have been scrapped.

In Kenya, TTCs offer numerous courses, including the Diploma in Primary Teacher Education (DPTE) and the Diploma in Early Childhood Teacher Education (DECTE).

TTC Admission Process

The admission process into TTCs is transparent and straightforward. Some students are placed by the Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS).

However, if KUCCPS did not place you, you could still apply directly by submitting your KCSE Results Slip or Certificate to your preferred TTC.

REVISED TEACHER TRAINING COLLEGE MINIMUM ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

i. Diploma in Primary Teacher Education;

  • Mean Grade of C plain only. No more requirements on subject based performance. All you need is a C (plain) at KCSE Exams. Only that.

ii. Diploma in Early Childhood Teacher Education;

  • Mean Grade of C plain only.

DPTE Admission Requirements

For admission into DPTE, you need a KCSE Mean Grade of C (Plain).

For candidates with disabilities, the minimum entry grade is C- (Minus) in the above cluster of subjects.

DECTE Admission Requirements

For DECTE, a C (Plain) Mean Grade in the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education Examination (KCSE) is required. Candidates with disabilities are admitted with a C- (Minus) grade.

Course Duration

Both DPTE and DECTE courses last for three years. During this period, you will be required to cover the recommended hours for coursework and practicum and pass the assessments directed by the Kenya National Examination Council (KNEC). A three-month micro-teaching course will also be undertaken as a pre-requisite for teaching practice.
