Western Region Secondary School Sports Championships began on Wednesday with Musingu High School thrashing Vihiga Boys High 2-0 in the opening soccer match.

Both teams had solid possession of the ball with Musingu taking advantage of open chances and confusion from the opponents to aim at the target.

Musingu, who hails from Kakamega scored the first goal during the first half of the match and the second goal during the second round of 45 minutes. Allan Litwaka from Musingu scored the first goal as Elvis Ochieng playing number 7 scored the second goal during the second round.

The School’s football Coach Mr. Brenden Mwinamo who was elated with exemplary performance in the opening match said the first win is a motivation to players whom he expects will do even better during other encounters.

He said the team’s defence was not as effective with the boys playing at a lower speed than expected. “We are going to correct our weaknesses, especially in the defense in order to do more during our next match,” he noted.

The coach said they are hopeful to win this year’s regional championships and proceed to the Nationals which will still be held in Kakamega. He noted that Musingu is coming back to the secondary school football map after failing to reach the regionals for the last 18 years.

“Football is not about hatred, football brings friendship. Whoever wins we will support them but we will work hard to lift the trophy,” he added.

The coach for Vihiga Boys Mr. Dancun Kihima said they didn’t expect to lose but noted the weak areas which they will work on to ensure they win the upcoming matches.

He said the first mistake during the first half of the match was from the goalkeeper who missed the ball and the full-back who attempted to save it but also missed giving their opponents an open chance to score.

“In the second goal, our striker lost the ball in the half field and our opponents made a comeback to score. Our fullback at that time was lost, delaying the counterattack making the opponents have an advantage of scoring,” he added.

He said the team missed a technical aspect at the midfield to pass the ball to the strikers following the injury of one of their best midfielders during a training session earlier this week.

“We have two midfielders whom we are preparing and once we come in the second match, we will be fine,” he added
