The government is committed to ensuring a smooth transition for students advancing from Grade 8 to Grade 9 in January 2025, according to Eliud Owalo, the Deputy Chief of Staff in charge of Performance and Delivery Management in the Executive Office of the President.
Owalo confirmed that the government has finalized plans to construct an additional 16,000 classrooms across the country to accommodate the expected increase in students.
“The government has put in place financial mechanisms to ensure the construction of the required 16,000 classrooms across the country, in preparation for students joining Grade 9 in January 2025,” Owalo stated.
To address the teacher shortage, the government also plans to absorb 46,000 intern teachers into permanent roles and hire an additional 20,000 teachers.
“We are aware of the teacher shortage, and that’s why the government has decided to absorb 46,000 intern teachers through the Teachers Service Commission and also recruit 20,000 more teachers, with advertisements already out,” he added.
