Form one admissions 2024; What you must consider

Are you looking for a good secondary school for your son/daughter ? The clamour is back.

Here are some tips:

1. Look for a school that is admitting students of similar academic abilities with your child. The learning is student based not school based.

2. If you place your child in a school admitting students above the ability of your child, that will be a wring decision. The pace of learning is pegged on quarters. The teachers move at the speed of the top two quarters. Your child will be in the third or fourth quarter. That’s the quarter that requires special attention but they don’t get it because the set objectives are achieved once the higher quarters pass the set parameters.

3. When you place your child in a school that is admitting students with the same academic abilities with your son/daughter, he/she will be able to cope with the learning pace. He/she will be able to compete favourably with other learners. He becomes motivated because the teacher is in tandem with his or her learning ability. This will greatly motivate them and raise their self esteem.

4. From experience, students getting low grades improves greatly once they are taken to schools of their academic level.

5. As a teacher, I will not take my son to a “big school” if he scored below 300. I will be exposing him to humiliation as he competes with fast learners. He will have no impetuous to compete. I would take him to a less populated school admitting that same average of his marks. Here, he/she will appreciate himself/herself and the teachers will likewise appreciate him/her. Taking the child to a ‘big’ school makes them frustrated leading to indiscipline as a defence mechanism.
