Early to Mid‑1990s:

Fred Matiang’i Political Career — Cabinet Appointments

23 April 2013:

Dr. Fred Matiang’i was appointed as Cabinet Secretary for Information, Communications and Technology (ICT) by President Uhuru Kenyatta. In this role, he managed the government’s transition from analogue to digital television broadcasting, expanded national fibre‑optic networks, and modernised government communication infrastructure.

24 November 2015:

He was appointed Cabinet Secretary for Education, Science and Technology. In this position, he oversaw major reforms in Kenya’s education system, including measures to curb exam cheating, restructuring national examinations management, and enforcing stronger teacher and school accountability.

8 July 2017:

Following the death of his predecessor, Matiang’i was appointed Cabinet Secretary for Interior and Coordination of National Government in an acting capacity, later confirmed in January 2018. His work involved national security oversight, police reform, coordination of county governance, and law and order enforcement.

2018 – 2022:

During his tenure in the Interior docket, he also chaired the National Development Implementation and Communication Cabinet Committee, coordinating the work of all ministries and public service leadership.
