
The New KCSE Grading System implemented by Knec
The Kenya National Examinations Council, Knec, has implemented the new grading structure for the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE). The new grading structure was unveiled by the Ministry of Education in 2023; as per the recommendations of the presidential working party, on education reforms.
In the computation of the KCSE 2023 mean grade, only two mandatory subjects, Mathematics and one language, have been used.

This now means that KNEC has done away with the previous system where 5 subjects were mandatory, a method expected to increase the number of candidates qualifying for their upper education.

This is part of the recommendations from the presidential working party on education reforms, which discredited the 8-4-4 system as a disadvantage to other learners.
