Pathways in the new Basic Education reorganization.

The Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development, KICD, has released the final pathways of Basic Education under the Competency based Curriculum, CBC.

According to the final model, there will be five levels of education, namely: Pre-primary Education, Primary Education, Junior School, Senior School and finally University/ Tertiary Education & Training.

Pre-Primary Education and Lower Primary levels have been aggregated together to form the foundation level, while upper primary will now be called intermediate level. Pre-vocational level will have Junior School and Senior School forms the Vocational level.

At Senior School, learners will have three pathways: Arts & sports Science, Social Sciences and Science, Engineering, Technology and Mathematics (STEM).

Focus on the Basic Education Levels.

A deeper look at the various education levels reveals that Pre-primary will focus more on interaction skills in PP1 & PP2. Primary level focuses on socialization skills at Grade one to Six. Learners will sit for the Kenya Intermediate Level. Education Assessment (KILEA) assessment exam by KNEC to evaluate students’ learning progress and competencies at grade three.

Junior School which has three classes (Grade 7, 8 and 9) is to focus on exploration. To transit to Senior School, Grade six Learners will again do another summative examination; Kenya Primary School Education Assessment (KPSEA).

At the end of Junior School level, Grade nine learners will be subjected to the Kenya Junior School Education Assessment and will be computed as follows: 20 per cent from the Kenya Primary School Education Assessment at the end of Grade Six, 20 per cent from school-based assessments in Grade Seven and Eight and 60 per cent from the Grade 9 summative exam.

Senior school will finally have three classes; Grade 10, 11 and 12 focusing on Pre-Career Skills (Specialization) with graduates proceeding to University/ Tertiary Education & Training.
