ROLL-OUT OF COMPETENCY BASED ASSESSMENTS (CBA) IN SENIOR SCHOOLS
The Commission wishes to draw your attention to the attached communication from the Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) Ref. KNEC/GEN/CBA/SS/REG/2026/00} dated 8 May, 2026 on the roll-out of Competency Based Assessments (CBA) in Senior Schools.
The communication outlines key requirements and timelines relating to:
a) Registration of institutions as Senior School Assessment Centres;
b) Registration of Grade 10 learners in the KNEC CBA portal;
c) Teacher capacity building through the CBA self-paced training portal;
d) Administration of School Based Assessments (SBAs); and
e) Uploading and reporting of assessment scores.
You are required to carefully study the attached KNEC guidelines and ensure strict compliance with the stipulated timelines and procedures.
In particular, all Heads of Institutions should ensure that:
1. Their institutions are registered as Senior School Assessment Centres within the timelines provided by KNEC;
2. All Grade 10 learners are registered in the KNEC portal;
3. Teachers handling Grade 10 are adequately sensitized on School-Based Assessments and use of the CBA portal; and
4. Necessary institutional arrangements are put in place for effective implementation of the assessments.
Please note that the roll-out of Competency Based Assessments is a critical component in the implementation of Competency Based Education (CBE) in Senior School and all institutions are expected to fully comply with the KNEC requirements.
By a copy of this Circular, alt TSC Regional Directors, County Directors and SubCounty Directors are required to sensitize schools and monitor compliance within their respective jurisdictions.
You are required to accord this matter the urgency and attention it deserves.
