9,000 needy Students to benefit from Form One Elimu Scholarships in 2024 -

The government has commenced the process of selecting 9,000 needy and deserving learners to be offered scholarships to pursue secondary school education.

The Director in charge of Projects Coordination and Delivery at the Ministry of Education Elijah Mungai says the 2024 Elimu Scholarship programme targets those who scored at least 280 marks in last year’s KCPE examination.

He however says the cut off could be lowered for those from marginalized areas as well as special needs learners.

Speaking at Mavoko Sub-County in Machakos County during the launch of the selection exercise, Mungaisaid the scholarship caters for fee payment, personal effects, transport to and from school as well as the mentorship and monitoring process of the leaners.

“At the end of it other than just facilitating children to be retained in school, we are also interested in improving their learning outcomes,” he said.

The Elimu Scholarship programme, which is facilitated through the Kenya Education and Equity Learning Programme, is managed by the Jomo Kenyatta Foundation in partnership with the Ministry of Education.

Mungai says the selection exercise is being carried out in the 47 Counties and 15 urban informal settlements across the country.

“And this is rolled out to the whole country targeting all sub-counties and trying to reach the most vulnerable children using the community based selection model where the communities actually seat and identify the children who are needy,” said Mungai.

He said through intelligence and physical visit, the Community Selection Advisory Committee will ensure that only deserving applicants get the chance.
