The Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development (KICD) has released the final List of all Senior School CBC Subjects & Core Subjects for learners at Grades 10, 11 and 12. There will be a total of forty six (46) subjects at Senior school with Learners taking only 4 mandatory subjects namely: English, Kiswahili, Physical Education and Community Service Learning. These subjects will be Compulsory under their different pathways.

Additionally, there will be three pathways which are: Arts & sports Science, Social Sciences and Science, Engineering, Technology and Mathematics (STEM).

KICD SENIOR SCHOOL CORE SUBJECTS

The Senior School core subjects will be:

  1. English: (Learners who take Advanced English will not learn English Language as a learning area)
  2. Kiswahili: (Learners who take Kiswahii Kipevu will not take Kiswahili as a learning area) Focus on functional skills such as listening, speaking, reading, writing, observation, correct use of language structures.
    Developing communication skills is key component of the 21st century skills and integral to career success (Harvey, 2014).
  3. Physical Education (PE): Physical Education (PE) at Senior School aims to extend the development and mastery of sport skills in sportsmanship, sport administration and coaching to inform decisions on careers.
  4. Community Service Learning (CSL):Community Service Learning at SS is a core subject which emphasizes application of formal learning through engagement in community service learning activities. The purpose of CSL is to provide experiential learning opportunities that enable learners to apply acquired knowledge, skills, attitudes and values in different contexts as they provide beneficial service to the community. It will integrate ICT skills too.

SENIOR SCHOOL PATHWAYS AND TRACKS

Here is a detailed explanation of the three Senior School Pathways;

A. SENIOR SCHOOL PATHWAYS AND TRACKS- SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY, ENGINEERING & MATHEMATICS (STEM)

  1. PURE SCIENCES- Having: Mathematics, Advanced Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry, Physics and General Science
  2. APPLIED SCIENCES- With: Agriculture, Computer Science, Home Science and Drawing & Design.
  3. TECHNICAL STUDIES with the following subject areas: Aviation Technology, Building and Construction, Electrical Technology, Metal Technology, Power Mechanics, Wood Technology, Media Technology* and Marine and Fisheries Technology. The last two subjects will be developed later for particular schools.

B. SENIOR SCHOOL PATHWAYS AND TRACKS- SOCIAL SCIENCES.

The Social Studies Pathways will be composed of two branches;

  1. LANGUAGES & LITERATURE: Offering: English, Advanced English, Literature in English, Indigenous Languages, Kiswahili, Kenya Sign Language, Kiswahili Kipevu, Fasihi Ya Kiswahili, Sign Language, Arabic, French German. Both English and Kiswahili or  Kenya Sign Language will be compulsory.
  2. HUMANITIES & BUSINESS STUDIES with: Christian Religious Education, Islamic Religious Education, Hindu Religious Education, Community Service Learning (which will be compulsory), Business Studies, History & Citizenship and Geography.

C. SENIOR SCHOOL PATHWAYS AND TRACKS- ARTS & SPORTS SCIENCE.

Just like the Social Studies Pathways, this one will be composed of two branches namely:

  1. SPORTS SCIENCE: With Sports & Recreation Science plus Physical Education (which will be Compulsory).
  2. ARTS: This sub branch will be composed of three learning areas; Music & Dance, Theatre & Film and Fine Arts.
